Brooks Koepka
Brooks Koepka started golf very early: While other children are still learning to walk, he took his first steps with a plastic club in his hand and swept the balls through the house. But baseball and basketball also belonged to the little boy's passions. When he broke his nose at the age of 10 and was not able to practice any sports close to his body for a certain time, he concentrated on golf. A short time later he dropped the other balls and concentrated completely on the smallest white ball. Koepka's talent for other sports is in his blood. His great-grandson played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and even excelled as a basketball player in the NBA. His father Bob pitched for West Virginia Wesleyan. Even though he made a quick decision for golf at that time, he has always remained true to baseball and could have imagined a professional career here as well.
An unusual way into the elite of golf
And he's so good at golf. The goal was already set in teenage days: The American wanted to be one of the best players in the world. Today, as world number one (May 2019), one can say: He has reached his goal! In doing so, he decided on his very own — and in the USA — unusual way. Unlike many of his colleagues, he didn't go on the USA's web.com Tour after college, but dared to cross the pond together with his buddy Peter Uihlein (son of Titleist boss Wally Uihlein). On the Challenge Tour of the European Tour, the then 22-year-old felt really well that he was able to win his first victory directly. And it went on so successfully: Within a few months as a professional in Europe, he was already able to solve the ticket for the European Tour. That Koepka is a globetrotter who likes to think outside the box is also shown by his participation in the Japan Tour, where he also celebrated two victories. In 2014 he also made it on his "home tour" and celebrated his first victory only one year later. All in all, Brooks has had a dream career as a professional golfer: In six years he has already celebrated 13 victories on four tours — among them even four major tournaments. This might also be a good sign for brother Chase Koepka, who follows in his brother's footsteps and is currently on the title hunt on the European Tour.
